DEATH: ELAINE CHRISTENSON SOUTHWICK MEREDITH
Elaine Christenson Southwick, age 92, died at Bountiful, Utah, June 28, 1995 of causes incident to age.

She was born in Manti, Utah October 12, 1902 daughter of Albert H. and Jennie Snow Christenson. She married Edward Webb Southwick May 25, 1927 in the Salt Lake Temple with David O. McKay performing the ceremony.

She graduated from BYU with a BA degree in speech. She did post graduate work at BYU, University of Wisconsin and University of Utah. While at BYU she was a charter member of O.S. Travata, a social unit.

She joined the Southern Utah University faculty in 1955 and later became Dean of Women.

She retired in 1963. She later returned to the university and taught classes in speech, literature and poetry. She also taught in the secondary schools in Cedar City for 15 years prior to the university.

She has been active in numerous church and civic activities including stake board positions in the Relief Society, MIA and Primary Associations. She served an 18-month mission for the LDS Church in Florida in 1976-77 after her husband's death in 1971. She has served as president of various literary and drama clubs in Cedar City and has been a member of choirs and musical groups including the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. She has written for the Relief Society magazine and other publications, published a poetry book with over 400 of her poems, and wrote and directed a genealogical radio program entitled "Is This Your Story?"

She was president of the senior citizens of Provo and received the BYU Emeritus award as well as the Distinguished Service award at Southern Utah University.

She has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, the South Pacific and Israel.

Even though she has accomplished much in her life, family relationships and traditions have always been of the highest priority part of which is expressed in these words which she wrote; "I'll have lived a good life in the total sum if my days are worth what my children become".

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward W. Southwick, being married to him for 44 years. She was married to Leo G. Meredith for six and a half years when he died in 1986.

She is survived by one daughter, Donna S. Beckstead of Salt Lake City; and three sons, Edward H. Southwick of Ogden; Richard G. Southwick of Centerville; and Paul R. Southwick of Cedar City; one brother, A. Sherman Christenson of Provo; and two sisters, Norma Webster of Salt Lake City; and Kathryn Gardner of Provo.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 1, 1995 at 10 a.m. in the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 South Highland Drive, where friends may call from 9:00-9:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Lehi City Cemetery.
