Horace served during the Civil War enlisting in the 16th Maine Infantry 1862 discharged 1862. Enlisted in the 1st Maine Cavalry in October 1863 and discharged July 1865 having the rank of 1st Sergeant in Company F.

During his service with the Cavalry he served alongside his father, Daniel Bolton, who was a Sergeant in the same Company & Regiment.

He also served as a Chaplin with the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War.
