William served as a Sergeant, Company C, 4th Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

The Morning News, Wilmington, DE, 4 Oct 1924 (Saturday), Page 2:

William H. Blest, 85 years old, veteran member of the Fourth Delaware Regiment, Company C, died yesterday after a lingering illness of more than two years, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Florence Wilkinson, 216 West Twenty-fourth street.

The deceased was born in Wilmington, son of the late Thomas and Mary Blest. He attended the public schools and later entered the employ of James Scott, leather tanner. Before having completed his apprenticeship, however, he enlisted in the army as private and actively engaged in eight battles of the Civil War, receiving an appointment as sergeant while in Petersburg, Va.

Upon his return from the war, he resumed his work with Mr. Scott and was later made superintendent of the factory at Third and Madison streets, holding that position for a number of years. Mr. Blest then went to work for William W. Warner in his factory at Beech street and Maryland avenue, remaining with Mr. Warner, even after the latter gave up the leather business and opened a horse sale stable. He retired ten years ago, but for about fifteen years before that, served as night watchman at Kennard-Pyle store.

Mr. Blest was a member of the Water Witch Fire Company, the G. A. R., Hope Lodge of Odd Fellows, Eastlake Methodist Church, and the United Workmen.

He is survived by the following children: Mrs. A. Murphy and Mrs. Wilkinson of this city; Harry C. Blest, of Chester, and Frank S. of Brooklyn, N. Y. One brother, John Blest of West Chester and two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Smith and Mrs. M. Crisfield of this city, also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted from his late residence Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with interment at Riverview cemetery.
