Born in Germany in 1810, Mary Styles (or the more Germanic Maria Magdalena Steitz) and her husband Johann Phillip Dickes planned to emigrate to the United States. Her husband died prior to boarding the ship in 1852. A pregnant Mary and her ten children - John, Adam, Reinhardt, Philipena, Elizabeth, Henry, Louisa, Mary, Catherine and Barabara left Germany and travled through to England then on to New York Harbor aboard the ship, Southhampton arriving on January 2, 1853. Four days later she gave birth to her last son, Philip in New York.
