Had seven children. Inherited the Louthan home from her father, the last three children were born there. Maggie attended St. Mary's of the Woods, where her father was a benfactor, in Terre Haute, IN. Quite talented artistically, some of her drawings are in possession of her granddaughter.

MARGARET AMANDA LOUTHAN
11th child of
John Kerfoot Louthan and Amanda Jane Moore
Born 14, Jan. 1873

Maggie was born in her father's house south of Arcola, IL the 11th child and 3rd from the last. Her father, John Kerfoot was a benefactor of St. Mary's Inst. (later known as St. Mary's of the Woods) in Terre Haute, IN. and decided to send Maggie there.
She had been a good student in school and very artistic, and he wanted her to further her education. We are not sure exactly when she started at St. Mary's (as of 2003) We do know she was there in 1890 because of her sketches, and assume this as her first year because of her age of 17. Maggie's sketches were of European buildings, cottages and castles and some were very detailed drawings of flowers. In the possession of granddaughter Darla-Deane Jones Haas.

Maggie may have been in school a year or two when her younger sister Alice Gertrude turning 17 in 1891, wanted to go there also. J.K. was not enthused about sending her, but agreed to it. However unfair it was to Maggie, he said Gertrude could go, but he would hold Maggie responsible if Gert didn't follow the school rules or didn't get good grades. Well, Gert didn't and J.K. yanked them both out of school and wouldn't allow Maggie to return. Maggie had taken her schooling quite seriously and it was a very sad time for her. Her marriage to Arthur Charles Jones followed in 1893 at the age of 20.

Both of their father's, John Kerfoot Louthan and Malden Arthur Jones had money and land and both had erected large homes, John's south of Arcola and Malden's in the town of Bourbon, which he founded. Our family history has Malden giving each child land when they married, but we haven't established where Arthur and Maggie lived when starting their marriage. My Aunt Margueritte recorded that the first three sons were born in a log house, and that information would have come from her mother, Maggie.

From sometime after son Malden Arthur's birth in 1897 to at least 1901, Art and Maggie had moved to Storm Lake, Iowa. Maggie's sister Clara Bair lived there and we can only surmise that the Jones family now with three small boys, Ed L., Roy L., and Malden A. II, moved there to farm. Maggie also had a brother Walter Wallace who lived in Iowa at that time.

Maggie made more sketches in the winter of 1900, and their fourth son John Kerfoot was born in 1901 in Storm Lake. They moved back to Arcola before 1904, and the last three children were born in the Louthan house. The first to be born there was Benton Thomas in 1904, followed by Claude Laurence in 1908, then followed by two miscarriages, both boys. By now the family was doing quite well, and in 1913 Maggie finally got her little girl, Margueritte Evelyn. Margueritte was not born healthy and they nearly lost her several times, but she was a survivor, and was the last of Art and Maggie's children to leave us.

When the Jones family moved back to Arcola, Maggie's father John Kerfoot's health was beginning to fail so he wanted Maggie and family to live there with him and take care of the farm. He later deeded the farm to Maggie. Maggie was still bearing children when J.K.'s health became worse, and he went to live with another daughter Lillian Mae, on the Righter farm west of Arcola. John Kerfoot Louthan died 28, Oct. 1908. Arcola Cemetery, Arcola, IL. Our Margaret Amanda d. 4, Apr.1942 of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 69 at the home of a son, Malden Arthur II, Hindsboro, IL. Arthur Charles died 7, Feb. 1936 of a heart attack at age 66, both buried in Arcola Cemetery.
