Joseph served in the Federal Army from Nov 1863 to the close of the war. He graduated from Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tennessee in 1871. Entered the Baptist ministry in 1874. Taught at various places; served as President of Ewing College, Ewing, Illinois, and Sante Fe College, Sante Fe , Tennessee. Served as pastor to a number of country and village churches; served as a Moderator of Ebenezer Association for 14 consecutive years. Received a D. D. from Union University.
