Joyce B. McCann, 77, of Cape Elizabeth, died peacefully on Sept. 8, 2008, at the Monarch Center, in Saco with her loving family by her side.
She was born Dec. 16, 1930, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of William J. and Nora McSweeney Bradley. The Bradley family moved to Portland where Joyce attended Sacred Heart School and was a 1948 graduate of Cathedral High School. She earned her bachelor of arts degree from St. Joseph's College, her master's degree from the University of Maine, and in 1985 earned her doctorate from Boston University.

Joyce began her career in education teaching kindergarten at St. Dominic's in Portland. As her interest in the field of learning disabilities grew she brought her talents to Waynefleet School, eventually moving into administration as the Director of Special Education for the Scarborough School System and Brunswick Schools, from which she retired in 1995. Joyce's professional knowledge and contributions to teachers, parents and children in the schools where she served were without parallel.
Her interests included gardening, travel, tennis, and skiing. She was a volunteer at many organizations, most notably, The Center for Grieving Children. Joyce was an artistic soul with a sense of color and perspective that graced the rooms in her home, her wardrobe, and delighted all who had the benefit of her guidance during shopping trips and in decorating their own homes. She visited England, Ireland, and Italy enjoying the scenery, history, museums, and companionship of her friends.
