PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- Shirley M. (Hellmer) Crow, 84, formerly of Platteville, died from Alzheimer's disease Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Don and Marilyn Anderson Hospice-Care Center, Madison.

Services and a Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home, Platteville, with the Rev. John Christianson officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

She was born on Dec. 4, 1923, in Platteville, daughter of Frank and Wanda (Peacock) Hellmer.

She grew up in Big Patch and graduated from Platteville High School in 1942. Shirley lived in Bakersfield, Calif., and Fallon, Nev., but Platteville was always home. She lived at Ingleside Nursing Home, Mount Horeb, for the last four years.

Shirley worked as a nursing assistant at Gray's Nursing Home, Platteville, and as an interior designer at Graves Paint and Paper.

She was one of three charter members of the VFW Women's Auxiliary. Shirley loved animals, was fond of the outdoors, enjoyed gardening and traveling and was an avid walker. Growing up, she loved to swim at Big Rock. She enjoyed a variety of music and dance, sewing, painting, doing crafts, refinishing furniture, and watching football. Shirley especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Surviving are two children, Stephen Crow and Karen (Crow) Burg, both of Madison; six grandchildren, Kimberly Melvin, of Reedsburg, Jody Gates, of Evansville, Phil (Annette) Crow, of Montfort, Paul Crow, of Madison, Anisha (John) Olsen, of Stoughton, and Andrea Burg, of Madison; five great-grandchildren, Matthew Melvin, Ryan and Trina Olsen, Madisen and Maya Crow; a sister-in-law, Alyce "Susie" Hellmer, of McFarland; and nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Corwin "Tweet" Hellmer; and her former husband, Donald Crow.
