Elias and his brother Mark came from Conecuh Alabama to Jones Ms with the Elihu and Olive Brown family about 1859.

It appears they left Alabama to avoid the war.
There was a sizable migration in the 1860 Census from Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama to Mississippi and West. Jones County was anti-slavery overall. The State of Jones, "I have not yet begun to fight", other secession, seems to be humor attached.


The inscription below was here when the memorial was transferred to me.

It is my own belief that the Confederate soldier buried in Tennessee is a different Elias. I could be wrong.
