Comrade J. C. Porter Called To The Long Last Rest Wednesday.
After many weeks of intense suffering J. C. Porter passed peacefully away at his home in west Buckeye Street Wednesday morning a 1:10 o'clock, at the age of 77 years, 7 months and 10 days.
Mr. Porter was born in Milford Center, Union county, on September 27th, 1829. In 1849 he came to Belle Center as an apprentice to Saddler Irick, and continued to engage in that line of work for many years. But two other persons now living have been residents of the town longer than he. On February 1st 1853, he was married to Elizabeth M. Van Syckle, and to them six children were born, two of whom have preceded him in death. A faithful wife, four children Mrs. A. F. Lile, of Lima, Mrs. A. D. Rogers, Mt. Victory, Mrs. Charles Carson, Muncie Ind., and Clarence Porter, Kenton and many relatives and friends survive. Comrade Porter was mustered into the United States service on February 15th 1862, as a private of the 13th Independent Battery, Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery under Captain J. B. Myers. He took part in the battle of Shiloh, Tenn. was transferred April 20th 1862, to the 7th Independent Battery. He was honorably discharged July 25th 1865, Cincinnati, on account of surgeon's certificate of disability. The 7th Battery participated in the following engagements: - Siege of Corinth, Big Hatcher River, Siege of Vicksburg, Jackson, Baker's Creek, Benton and a number of skirmishes. At Shiloh Comrade Porter received injuries from which he never fully recovered. After returning from the Army Mr. Porter became a Notary Public and has served in that capacity for about forty five years. He also served as Justice of the Peace for four years. Funeral services will be held today at 1:30 o'clock from the M. E. church. Rev. J. Williams will be assisted by Rev. I. M. Knipe in conducting the service. Internment will be made in Fairview Cemetery.
