William Landon Dunegan Sr was born on January 10, 1827 in Greene County, Tennessee to Daniel Dunegan Jr and Frances Daniels. William married Sidney Caroline Mayfield and had five known children. Dallas, William Jr, Alice, Leonidas and Rufus. All of their children were born in or near Newton County, Missouri. William died in battle on February 29, 1864 in Tennessee. His burial location is at the Knoxville National Cemetery. His wife and four children are on the 1870 US Census for Bonham, Fannin County, Texas living with the John R Garnett family.
