Elmer J. Belknap was born in 1868 in Williamston, Michigan to Abel Belknap and Marie Hart Belknap. His mother Marie emigrated to Michigan from England, along with three of her brothers: Samuel Hart, Benjamin Hart, Jr. and James Hart, all of Williamston, Michigan.

Elmer's maternal grandparents were Benjamin Hart, Sr. and Lucy West Hart of Bottisham Lode, Cambridgeshire, England.
His siblings were: Lucy M. Belknap (Long) (b 1873, d 1941), Frances "Franky" Geneva Belknap (b 1875, d 1958), and Sophronia "Frona" M. Belknap (McKane) (b 1877, d 1925).

There is a possibility that Elmer's mother was not Maria Hart Belknap, as possibly Abel Belknap was married previously. There is a listing in Riverside Cemetery (River Bend Cemetery), Okemos, Ingham County, Michigan:
Belknap, Abel, b. 1839, d. 1899, American flag
Belknap, Mervena, b. 1841, d. 1870 (?)
Mervena could be Elmer's mother as he was born in 1868. Maria Hart Belknap was buried in Glendale Cemetery, Sec. 1.
Per the 1900 Census, Abel and Maria were married in 1871; however, it did state that they had four children.

Elmer never married, but did live with his sister Frances, per the 1930 Census.

Elmer was first cousin to my grandmother, Rose Mae Hart Kleiver. He died in 1942 at abt age 74.
