He was the son of Robert Richardson and Ellen Potts. His father died when he was very young, and his mother, Ellen, remarried to James Morrison, of Scotland. Being the only father he'd ever know, Joseph took the name of his step-father, and began going by the name, "J.P.R." (Joseph Potts Richardson) Morrison, forever changing the names of his descendants from Richardson's to Morrison's.

J.P.R. married Minnie Madelyn Whitehead (10 Sep 1864-14 Jul 1940) in 1886, probably in Seattle. They had 9 children, namely: Noble, Roscoe, Edison, Bessie, Joseph, Victoria, Reginald, James, and Kathryn.

He was a Marine Biologist and a ship captain.
