Joseph Donald Sayles, 88, died of natural causes on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home.

He was born on Oct. 2, 1919, on Sayles Creek in Johnson County.

As a young child he moved with his family to the Pitchfork Ranch in Meteetsee. He was raised on mare's milk since it was easily accessible on the ranch.

He graduated from Meteetsee High School and then began to work on a sheep ranch.

He married Laura E. Putney and she died in 1978. He later married Betty Smesler.

He came to Gillette and worked for Bud and Alice Christiansen for 20 years as a ranch hand and breaking horses. He worked briefly for Gary McWilliams at the Chrysler dealership before retiring.

He was always the first to have his walk shoveled in the winter and lawn mowed in the spring and summer. He took great pride in his yard, spending much of his time manicuring it, even trimming his own trees well into his 80s.

He was a caring person. Since he didn't have any children of his own, he treated the neighborhood kids as if they were his. This caring nature was also reflected in how he took valiant care of his wife Betty at home until she entered into the nursing home. After she died, many of his neighbors and friends took him under their wing and helped with meals, rides, and visits.

He is survived by his sister, Louise Putney, of Cody, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Frank and Emil, three sisters, Evely, Annie, and Vera, and his two wives, Laura and Betty.

Internment will be in the Meteetsee Cemetery in Meteetsee.
