There has been much confusion regarding the name and Civil War record of Jeremiah Creyfield "J. C." Randolph. He may have gone by J. C. as seen in the 1850 census and as seen on his 1860 marriage license where his name is written as J. C. and Jeremiah C. "On a number of the cards in his war record, the name J. C. and Jeremiah C. are used interchangeably, removing any doubt as to this being the eldest son of Lorenzo Dow, and to show that his name was not James C., as incorrectly listed on the 1860 census." From page 124 of The Randolphs of Alabama, Kenneth L. Randolph, Gregath Publishing Company, Eastern Division P. O. Box 1045 Cullman, AL 35056, Mid-West Division P. O. Box 505, Wyandotte, OK 74370, 1994, ISBN 93.81087.
Jeremiah enlisted as a private in the war, was captured and signed the "Oath of Amnesty" at City Point, VA on 29 December 1864 as J. C. Randolph, 43rd Ala, from Fayette County. Described as having: light complexion, black hair, blue eyes and 5 feet 8 inches high. The name and date on the oath corresponds to the name, regiment and location on the civil war service record cards: Company I, 43rd Alabama, Fayette County, AL. See photo.
The J. C. Randolph buried in the Lexington Cemetery, according to the "Report of Interment", (see photo) is John C. Randolph, Co. E, 34th Ga. Inf. The cemetery monument also has him listed in the 34th Georgia, see photo.
Jeremiah Creyfield was in the 43rd Alabama not the 34th Georgia, he signed the "Oath of Amnesty" on 29 December 1864, and is not the J. C. Randolph that died in Lexington, KY on 16 October 1862. It is not certain what became of him after the war. According to Kenneth Randolph in The Randolphs of Alabama, he may have remarried. Pages 122-125 contain a brief biography. https://www.familysearch.org/photos/artifacts/182967557?p=56453400&returnLabel=Jeremiah%20Creyfield%20Randolph%20(LC5C-VS6)
