OBITUARY:
Dr. Albert Minor Barker, dean of San Jose dentists who died yesterday, his history of Santa Clara county dentistry not quite completed. Final chapter in the life of Dr. Albert Minor Barker, 79, a practicing dentist in San Jose for the past 60 years, ended yesterday but his unfinished history of dentistry in Santa Clara County will be carried on by some other member of his profession. Dr. Barker died at a local hospital after a short illness. A sportsman and clubman, he lived at 985 The Alameda. A dental history of Santa Clara county, which he had not quite completed, will be carried on by some other dentist here, members of his family said last night. Born at Lake Geneva, Wis., in 1859, Dr. Barker moved with his family to Minnesota during Civil War days and at the outbreak of Sioux Indian hostilities. In 1875 the Barker family moved to San Jose, where Dr. Barker began the practice of dentistry in 1878 under his preceptor, Dr. William F. Gunckel. He married Minnie Wing December 24, 1884, and helped organize the Santa Clara Valley District Dental Society January 21, 1889. He was secretary of the society for more than 40 years. One of the organizers of the Elks Club here, he was a past exalted ruler of the order, a member of the San Jose Rod and Gun club, president of the Big Water Duck club of Los Banos and vice president of the Medico-Dental Building company. Trained in dentistry when there were no schools teaching the profession here, Dr. Barker took advantage of the start of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in San Francisco and graduated with the second class from that institution in 1899, continuing his San Jose practice while attending classes at night in San Francisco. He attended every meeting and convention of the dental association and frequently took courses in specialized branches of dentistry. (San Jose Mercury, San Jose, California 12/23/1938)
