She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with both a B.A. and an M.A. in psychology. She also attended Agnes Scott College and the University of Chicago. She was director of the South Carolina WPA Writer's Project, editor of the South Carolina Magazine, and professor of Navigation, English, and Sociology at USC and editor and director of the USC Press until her retirement.

She was named in Who's Who in American Women. She was a member of Congaree Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder and a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the South Caroliniana Society, South Carolina Historical Society, Poetry Society of South Carolina, and Phi Beta Kappa.

She wrote a number of plays and articles, including some one-act plays that were presented in Columbia. She was also the script writer for about 250 radio programs.
