His daughter, Beatrice Bearden and granddaughter, Brandy Kay Philmon preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-eight years, Nadia Cardwell; son, Johnnie Cardwell, Jr. and his wife Pat; daughter, Nadia Philmon and her husband Ken; son, William B. Cardwell and his wife Lynda; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and sister, Joyce Lofton.
