John P. Ashley Sr., 63, of 208 Spencer Road, Clendenin, died Sunday in St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, after a long illness.

He was employed by West Virginia Steel Corp., was an Adventist, a veteran of World War II, a Mason and past master of the Clendeninl odge.

Surviving: wife, Ruth Harper Ashley; son, Michael E. at home; daughters, Betty Jo Armstead of Winfield, Mary Katherine Payne of Clendenin, Joyce Ashley of Clendenin; mother, Mrs. Eva Ashley of Clendenin; brothers, Burl and Ernest of Clendenin, Harry of Akron, Ohio, Ray of Cross Lanes; sisters, Mrs. Viola Nichols of North Carolina, Mrs. Wilma Young of Clendenin, Mrs. Clara B. Drake of Wellington, Ohio, Mrs. Carolyn Zornes of Tucson, Ariz., Mrs. Mary Jane Graham of Elkview, Mrs. Patricia Pettit of Seaside, Calif.; six grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Myers Funeral Home, Elkview, with the Rev. Nahum Balser officiating. Burial will be in Payne Cemetery, Clio. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home where there will be a VFW service at 7:30 p.m.
