Pianist, Composer. At an early age he decided he would rather pursue a career in the musical world than follow in the footsteps of his wealthy, Jewish merchant father. He wrote his first opera at the age of eighteen and event though it was never produced, it provided him with some degree of fame with his piano performance. For several years he tour. While he was touring the great music centers of Europe for the next several years he also wrote his second opera, "Das goldene Kreuz." This opera was first performed on December 22, 1875 and provided him with immediate fame as a composer and as a pianist. When the opera debuted in London in March of the following year he was compelled to give twenty additional performances. He returned to England in 1881 for eight more performances. He then reduced his number of tours and began to concentrate on composing. After his marriage, he refused prestigious professorship positions in Berlin to remain close to his home. He also refused positions at the Vienna Conservatory, but taught at Vienna's Horak Piano Schools and became the artistic director there in 1881. He wrote well over one hundred piano works, many orchestral and chamber pieces as well as numerous operas. Sadly nearly all works have been away from the public view for over a hundred years.
