H.W. Ambrose Passes Away
Was Leader in Educational, Religious and Civic Life of Conway

Henry Wilson Ambrose died at his home here on last Saturday about eight thirty o'clock following a heart attack. He was sixty eight years of age.

While he had been in rather failing health for sometime past and had been treated at a number of leading hospitals of the country his death was unexpected and a shock not only to his family but to the entire community.

A physician was summoned to him after he had called a member of the family. He had been under the care of the physician for the last several weeks but was still attending to the duties of his office and he remained at his office through Friday, the day before he died. He had returned recently from Baltimore, where he had been treated for his trouble.

Mr. Ambrose came to Conway in the year 1905, just after the Conway Lumber Company had been organized, the largest manufactures of lumber any where in this section of country. He was secretary treasurer and general manager from about that time until his death. He was born in North Carolina on June 22nd, 1869. He was married on November 17th, 1900. He is survived by his widow and five children as follows: Howard Wilson and Raymond Gordon, of Conway; Misses Frances Victoria and Elizabeth Byars of Conway, and Mrs. W. A. Collins of Wadesboro NC; brother J. G. Ambrose of Norfolk VA, two sisters Mrs. James Griffin Paul Valley Oklahoma, and Miss Carolina Ambrose Washington DC, a half sister Mrs. India Griffin Oriental NC, one step brother L. S. Ward, of Conway; and two stepsisters Mrs. C. I. Stengle, of Washington DC, and Mrs. Howard Taylor, Staten Island NY

Funeral services were held on Monday morning eleven o'clock
at Conway Methodist Church by Rev. B. L. Knight, his pastor in charge of the service, assisted by Rev. J. Emerson Ford, presiding elder of the Marion District; Rev. W. W. Leathers, pastor of the Conway Baptist Church; Rev. C. D. Brearley, Presbyterian ministers. Interment was in Lakeside Cemetery.

Mr. Ambrose had limited educational facilities in his upbringing. It has often been said that he educated himself. Some regarded him as among the best informed men in the county. He was a very industrious man and a careful, preserving business man, never engaged in politics or local political disputes, but he was always ready to help in any movement that would lea to the upbuilding of this county and home town. He organized the Men's Bible Class of the Methodist Church and from time to time filled many of the offices of the church. He was chairman of the board of stewards at the time of his death.
