Actor. Born Henry Montgomery Jr., in Beacon New York, for over three decades he was a respected performer, director and producer, known as the Earl of Hollywood. He made his film debut in "Three Live Ghosts" (1929), followed by "So This is College" (1929). During the 1930s, he appeared in over thirty films to include "The Big House" (1930), "Private Lives" (1931), "Riptide" (1934), "Ever Since Eve" (1937) and "Fast and Loose" (1939). He was nominated twice for the Academy Award: Best Actor for "Night Must Fall" (1937) and "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (1941). His career was interrupted by World War II when he joined the US Navy and saw action in both Europe and the Pacific. After the war, he returned to MGM Studios and had memorable roles in films such as "They Were Expendable" (1945), "Ride the Pink Horse" (1947), "The Saxton Charm" (1948), "Once More, My Darling" (1949) and "Eye Witness" (1950). As a director, his credits included the films "Lady in the Lake" (1947), "The Gallant Years" (1960), plus the television series "Navy Log" and "Robert Montgomery Presents". He also was the father of actress Elizabeth Montgomery, plus has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for movies and one for television. He died of cancer at age 77 in New York City.
