Born in New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, son of George and Elizabeth Kidd Cooper. Arrived in Oregon in 1850 and setteled in the Umpqua Valley in what is now Douglas County. Married Harriet Dimmick daughter of Ziba and Cynthia Hall Dimmick 13 April 1854 in Umpqua Co.
Operated Cresent Ferry at Kellog, Douglas Co.(the in Umpqua Co.>, Ore. Homesteaded at Gardiner in 1857 was Posmaster until 1857 when they returned to Kellog.In 1864 the family moved to Wilbur wherw they raised their large family of ten children. In 1900 James and Harriet moved back to Kellog to live in Ziba's old homstead across the river from James first home.
