DECEMBER 15, 1960

District Judge Dayton Edwin Van Vactor, 65, died in Hillside Hospital Wednesday. He had presided at court until two weeks before his death. Judge Van Vactor was a victim of cancer. He had been a resident of Klamath Falls for 35 years.

He was a veteran of both World War I and II and had served the military a total of 17 years. He entered the service in WWI to serve in Germany and to be discharged as a sergeant. In WWII he was in the invasion of Normandy and reached the rank of Lietuenant Colonel.

He was graduated from Northwestern School of Law in Portland and in 1925 came to KlamathFalls to practice law that year. In 1930 he was named assistant district attorney and was elected district attorney in 1949. He became district judge in 1952 and was reelected for two succeeding terms.

Mr. Van Vactor was a native of Goldendale, Washington. He was a past exalted ruler and member of the Klamath Falls Elks Lodge, was a member of Pelican Post 1383, and Klamath Post No. 8, VFW, American Legion and also the Klamath County Bar Association.

Survivors include the widow Mary of this city; sons Robert Van Vactor of Roseburg, and William Van Vactor of Seattle; sisters Mrs. Thelma Norrie of Washington DC, Mrs. Catherine Wilson of Goldendale, Washington and half-brother Floyd Van Vactor of Portland.

He was the son of William Wilson and Emily (Robinson) Van Vactor.
He was married to Harriet Amanda Mosier (1895-1968)
and Mary Francis Kearney.
