Bagley, C J (Rene) (1) (i 19 Dec 1935) Star Valley Independent
C.J. Bagley, a prominent citizen of the Fairview ward died December 18, 1935 at his home here, after a long illness. He was the son of John and Mary Allan Bagley, Utah pioneers. He was born at Draper, Utah March 16, 1866 and would have been seventy years old his next birthday anniversary.
In 1868 he moved with his parents to the Bear Lake valley, settling first in Paris and then in Montpelier. On January 7, 1889 he married Miss Calista Dalrymple and to this union were born the following eight children; Mrs. viola Quayle, Dingle, Idaho. Mrs. Sam Roberts, Afton; Muriel Tolman (deceased) Parley, Oliver and Hugh Bagley, Fairview; Lewis Bagley of Montpelier and Ellsworth Bagley of Thermopolis, Wyoming. He has 26 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Bagley has been a rancher, cattleman and merchant during the thirty five years he has made his home here. His wife preceded him to the great beyond twelve years ago.
On June 13, 1927 he was married to Mrs. Jesse Van Scoyk, who proved to be a helpmate indeed, for she has given the best of care to her aged father and invalid husband for the past eight years.
Under the direction of Sidney Bagley, funeral services were held for Mr. Bagley December 21st at 12:00 o'clock
The choir sand "The Lord is My Shepherd."
prayer by Harold T. Allen.
Choir sang "Take Courage Saints"
A.R. Kennington gave a brief account of his acquaintance with Mr. Bagley. He remembered him when he was up and doing. He said Mr Bagley helped build the church house here and sold a big fat steer to help buy the chairs for it. In the prime of his life he was always an active worker in the community. He was well read in L.D.S,. church doctrine and always talking religion and giving good advice to those who would listen. he spoke of our belief in the resurrection.
Solo "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" by Ronald Allred.
Joe Linford said that it seemed as though Fairview is having more then her share of funerals (six in five weeks), but you could never tell who would be next because some die in infancy, some in prime of life and some at a good old age. He spoke of the fine mother Mr Bagley had and of her work with his mother in the Bear Lake Stake. He mentioned the fact that Mr. Bagley worked for six months in the Logan canyon helping to get timbers out for the Logan Temple and he did it all free. He said Mr. Bagley was not a complainer, in all his long sickness he always expected to get better and did all in his power to get better. He complimented Mrs. Bagley on the splendid job she had finished of taking care of her father and husband. He advised her to work in the ward activities to forget her sorrow. He advised everyone to carry on and make good in this our short stay here.
Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Allred, Mr and Mrs Harold Allen sang "That Beautiful Land"
Earl (Bob) Kennington said Mr Bagley was always eager to carry on conversation about religion, and he always gave freely good advice to young people. He said one failing the human race has, is that they very often neglect to give their friends credit or praise for the fine things they accomplish until they have gone away, and a little praise or encouragement helps more than we could ever imagine.
He said Ellsworth was one of his very best friends and he had always found him morally straight and clean and honest beyond a doubt. He quoted the 37the Chapter of Ezekiel and said death and the resurrection were the plans of the Lord, and we could not change these plans if we would.
Bishop Lindsay of Dingle ward said singing was one of the greatest ways to preach the gospel. His father worked with Mr. Bagley at the Temple Mill. he reminded us that service to our fellowmen counts most in this life.
