OBITUARY:
Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. John B. Wall, Durango, victims of the auto crash on the reservation west of Gallup on Sunday, August 1, were held in Farmington at the Methodist Church on Thursday of last week. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery here. Wall was born in Montague County, Tex., and his wife in Rice County, Kas. They were married at Chickasha, Okla., Feb, 4, 1903 and later moved to Colorado. They were survived by eight children; Ernest, Durango; Elmer, Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Fred, Dimmitt, Tex.; Weldon, Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Virginia, Redondo Beach, Calif.; Betty, Durango; Mrs. Della Longstreet, Redondo Beach and Mrs. Mary Grommett, Redondo Beach. Four other children are dead. Also surviving are Wall's brother, Charles Wall; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Hite, Mrs. Ollie Reynolds and Mrs. Beulah Smith. Mrs. Wall is survived by one brother, Delbert Waggoner and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Kinslow, Mrs. Bertha Daniels, and Mrs. Lillian Christensen. Seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive. Mr. and Mrs. Wall were well known residents of Durango and Farmington for many years. The accident in which the well known couple lost their lives occurred eleven miles north on a reservation trail road leading from Chambers, Ariz. on highway 66 to the Black Mountain Trading Post operated by Mr. and Mrs. Golden Nelson. The auto crash victims were aunt and uncle of Mrs. Golden Nelson and had been visiting at the post. A picnic had been enjoyed Sunday, a car setting out from the post containing nine persons, including Mr. and Mrs. Wall, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Anderson, Warren Bald of a local seismograph crew, a twelve year old boy, Lamar Penrod, and a lady whose name was not reported. Following the picnic the party was returning home about dusk. It is thot a front wheel of the car struck a sand spot, and cramped the wheels. The car overturned, throwing Mr. and Mrs. Wall clear of the car on the road, the car was righted and the injured couple rushed to Gallup, both passing away shortly afterwards. Golden Nelson is a brother of Manager Roswell Nelson of the Farmington Mercantile Co. (Farmington Times Hustler, Farmington, New Mexico 8/13/1948)
