Margaret was born as Margaret A. Fulton on May 10, 1918, in the Southwestern Iowa town of Clarinda. She graduated from Park College, culminating her active early years with a degree in engineering, an early sign of her determination and independence.
Following graduation, Margaret joined the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA), the predecessor of NASA in Hampton, Va. She worked on such projects as investigating the structural loads on sea planes.
It was there in Hampton that she met and married her lifelong companion, a fellow engineer, Roy Steiner, on Feb. 21, 1942, at Elizabeth City, N.C. She delivered and raised two sons, Gerry, born in 1943, and Duane, born in 1949. Margaret left NASA in 1949 to spend full time as a homemaker.
She was active in the Presbyterian Church, PTA, Women's Clubs, American Red Cross and PEO. After the children were older, she began teaching math and computer science. Following Roy's retirement, she returned with him to his hometown of Johnson, Wash. She continued her active, generous community contributions. She served as an elder at the Pullman Presbyterian Church and as an active Grange member as well as in her earlier community service activities.
Margaret was always fond of animals in general and cats in particular. She cared deeply for her constant companion, Spot. Margaret had long been recognized for her warmth, intelligence, determination and caring for others. Her contributions and caring will long be remembered.
She is survived by her two sons, Gerry Steiner of Littleton, Colo., and Duane Steiner of Ridgecrest, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Pullman Presbyterian Church, 1630 NE Stadium Way, Pullman. The Rev. Dan Saperstein of that church will officiate. Burial will follow in Pullman City Cemetery.
