He was born in Lima, Ohio on April 30, 1947 son of the late Edgar and Freida (Fett) South.
Michael graduated from Cridersville High School in Ohio in 1965. He attended Michigan Tech. University, obtaining an Associate Degree. He served in the US Navy as a sonar operator aboard the USS Kennedy.
Michael married the former Lynn Phillips in L'Anse on September 8, 1973.
He was employed as a paint operator for the Celotex Corp. for 26 year. He retired in 1999 due to ill health. Michael was a member of the L'Anse American Legion Post 144 where he held various posts. He was also a member of the N.R.A., and I.A.M His hobbies included, hunting, fishing and hiking. He also coached baseball.
Michael was survived by his loving wife; Lynn, son; Philip of Allendale, MI., brother; Melvin (Pam) South of Wapakoneta, Ohio, special sister-in-law; Janet Maanika and special friend; Tom Lindgren. Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survived.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill.
