He was a lover of nature and sports, fishing , hunting, and the mountains.

He loved to ride horses and was returning from riding, walking along the road when he was struck by a drunk driver who had run off the road. He was a member of Christ's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stanley.

A Stanley teenager was killed in Love Valley early Saturday morning when he was struck by car driven by a Statesville man who authorities said was intoxicated and fled the scene.

Jacob Michael Lutz, 17, was hit and killed while walking with a friend on Love Valley Road about 2:30 a.m. when he was hit by a car that had swerved off the road, according to Trooper Chad Crouse.

Crouse said he had been investigating a minor accident not far from where Lutz was struck when he saw a vehicle approach that had a broken windshield.

"The car also seemed to be going too fast near an accident scene," Crouse said.

Crouse thought the situation was worth pursuing so he followed the car and eventually pulled it over. The 1987 Ford Taurus was driven by James Dean Harmon, 40, of Statesville.

Soon after pulling him over, the report of the Lutz incident came in and Crouse determined Harmon to be a suspect in it.

Harmon was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, driving without a valid license, felony hit-and-run and second-degree murder.

He was being held at the Iredell County Detention Center Sunday on a $500,000 bond.

Harmon has three previous DWI convictions: two in North Carolina, in 1987 and 1988 and one in West Virginia from earlier this year, according to Crouse.
