8th Premier of Alberta. He served in this position from May 1943 until December 1968, and was the second longest-serving provincial premier in Canadian history at the time. The son of English immigrants, he graduated from Calgary Prophetic Bible Institute in 1930 and began preaching on the school's radio program. In 1935 he entered politics and joined the newly created Social Credit Party, and was elected to Alberta's Legislative Assembly, serving until March 1940. Following the death of Premier William Aberhart in 1943, he was chosen to replace him. During his tenure, he also held numerous other positions at various times, including minister of trade and industry, provincial treasurer, attorney general, minister of mines and minerals, and president of the executive council. A fiscal conservative, his deep Christian faith gave him a sense of charity to the poor and needy, and greatly influenced his approach to politics. In 1968 he left office and was succeeded by Harry E. Strom. In 1970 he was honored with a Companion of the Order of Canada, and was appointed as senator in the Alberta legislature for Edmonton West, serving until 1983. He died at the age of 87.
