William "Bill" Mullins Hardy was born 4 Apr 1848 in Mississippi to James and Lydia Mullins Hardy. The Hardy family moved to Arkansas (Little Rock area) when Bill was a small child (ca 1848-50) and about 1865 came by covered wagon to Anderson County, Texas. Bill was a farmer and also had a shingle mill in the Providence, Texas area. He was a Master Mason, a member of the Providence Lodge #400 and later the Elkhart Lodge. On 14 Nov 1872 Bill was married to Dollie Berry (1851-1881) daughter of Morgan and Elizabeth Reynolds Berry. After Dollie's death (she is buried at Providence Cemetery), he married Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" Dear on 13 Nov 1883, daughter of William Mack and Rebecca Miles Dear.

Bill also donated half an acre of the land on which the cemetery and church now sits.
