U.S. Congressman. A successful planter, he served as a Brigadier General in command of the South Carolina Militia during the War of 1812. After the war, he served in the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1816-19) and was a member of the South Carolina State Senate, (1820-24, 28). In 1831, he was elected as a Nullifier to the Twenty-second through Twenty-fifth Congresses and reelected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving until 1841. Shortly after leaving office, he died at age 51.
