John was the child of Edward Martin and Judith Upham. John was married to Joanna Esten on April 26, 1671 in Swansea, Massachusetts. John and Joanna had the following children. Jemima Salisbury, Melatiah Martin, John Martin, Ephraim Martin, Ann Round, Robert Martin, Manasseh Martin, Joanna Short, Ebenezer Martin, and Judith Luther.

John was christened at Ottery St. Mary, Devon, England. His mother, Judith Upham, daughter of Richard and Maria Upham, died in Dec 1635, and Maria died in July 1634.

John Upham, son of Richard and Maria and brother to Judith, at the age of thirty-five, along with his wife Joan, and his sister Joan who had married Robert Martin (both forty-four years old), and his sister Sarah, came under the Puritan influence and joined a group of twenty families called by Reverend Joseph Hull and sailed for New England March of 1634/1635. Judith Upham married Edward Martin at Bicton, England on June 14, 1632. They did not come to New England. Richard Upham’s will mentions John Martin and wife Joan(na) as having five shillings if they will come for it.
