Obit –Harold McCluskey
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 22, 1987, at the Baptist Church in Prosser, Washington, for former Decaturite Harold R. McCluskey. He died on August 17, at the Sumner Hospital. He was 75 years old.
Harold Ralph McCluskey was born July 19, 1912 to Blanche (Sanders) and Harley McCluskey near Decatur. He attended Burt County rural schools and graduated from Riverside High in 1930. On August 2, 1936, he was united with Ella Morrow at the Riverside Baptist Church. The couple had two daughters, Janice May and Joan Eloise.
McCluskey farmed in Burt County and did mechanical work. In 1948 he sold his property and moved to Richland, Washington, where he bought a fruit farm. Later he move to Prosser and, in 1951, began working as a trainee for the Hanford Atomic Area. He completed a 30-year career with the agency, working up to the position of engineer. He also worked as a lead nuclear process operator.
In 1976, Mr. McCluskey was involved in an atomic explosion mishap and was injured when he received four to five hundred times the amount of radiation taken by another human being, a relative said. Because of his unique exposure to radiation and having been the sole survivor of the incident for several years, McCluskey remained a valuable part of U.S. government atomic research.
Stories about the explosion and his role in the happening were published in several well-known magazines and papers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, who resided in Decatur and his brother, Arthur McCluskey. He is survived by his wife Ella; daughters Mrs. Janice (Gerald) Smith of Bellevue, WA and Mrs. Joan (Larry0 Schroeder of Sumner, WA; a brother Marion McCluskey of Tekamah; a sister, Mrs. Roy Alvin Mussack of Decatur; three granddaughters; two grandsons and two great grandchildren.
