Jo Ann is the daughter of Thomas Selby Slayden of Texas and Olive Winona Barnhart Slayden of Missouri. She married Robert Prather, Jr. on July 5, 1948 in San Benito, Texas. Jo Ann and Robert lived all their married life in San Benito. They had one daughter, Linda Ann Prather Howard.

Jo Ann was an artist and active member of the Harlingen Art Forum for many years. She co-chaired the Forum's well known Beachcomber's Art Show from 1971 to 1983. It is considered one of the largest and most prestigious shows in the Southwest. The most favored subjects in her paintings became the Texas Hill Country and Bluebonnets.

Jo Ann and her husband traveled to every state in the United States in their motorhome, except for Hawaii. She loved America and her home state, and was a true Texan.

Jo Ann Prather, 66, of San Benito, passed away Thursday, November 26, 1996 in Harlingen. She was a life time resident of the Rio Grande Valley and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of San Benito. She was also a member of the Fun Timers a chapter of the Good Sams and an active member of the Harlingen Art Forum. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Mr. Robert Prather of San Benito; daughter, Linda Crider of San Diego, CA; sisters, Mary Tarver of San Benito and Lois Peters of Harlingen; two grandchildren, Robert Crider and Amy Hayes of San Diego, CA.
