Mamie and her brother John were born on the grounds of the Hyde Park Brewery in St. Louis, Missouri, where the family resided and where their father worked. They were raised Catholic. Mamie worked at a shirt factory for several years helping her father buy a new home in St. Louis. At age 25, she married Philip H. W. Freise, a Protestant, a diligent man who worked at his father's meat market. Mamie and Phil had only one child, Marie Elizabeth. A deeply religious person, Mamie taught her daughter to spend wisely but she gave very generously. She adored her 3 grandchildren and spoiled them rotten. Mamie died of lymphosarcoma, a disease of the lymph glands, cancer. She is deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
