Mobile Campaign: March-April 1865 - Fort Blakely, Baldwin County, Alabama, April 2-9, 1865:
While most of the Federal force besieged Spanish Fort, US General Canby detached US General Steele's force to blockade Fort Blakely, three miles up the Apalachee River. Steele cut off the fort on April 2 and began digging siege lines. After Spanish Fort fell on April 8, Canby concentrated 18,000 men to attack Blakely. The fort was garrisoned by about 3,800 men under CS Brigadier General St. John R. Liddell, defending its nine redoubts. At 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 9 (the day that CS General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox) the Federals stormed forward over a front more than two miles long. They charged at a full run through abatis, fields of mines, and heavy gunfire. Their numbers were overwhelming, and they quickly broke through the Confederate defenses. The attack included US Brigadier General John P. Hawkins's division of U.S. Colored Troops.

Estimated Casualties: 775 US, 3,700 (including 3,200 prisoners) CS

It has long been accepted by that the American Civil War ended on April 9, 1865, with the surrender of general Robert E. Lee's army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant. Civil War research has shown that the Battle of Blakely was the last major battle of the Civil War occurring six hours after Lee surrendered at Appomattox.
