James M. Hackathorn, 82, believed to have been the oldest working East Liverpool potter, died today at 12:45 a.m. in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clara M. Powell, at 2305 St. Clair Avenue following a seven-week illness.
Hackathorn, a dishmaker, was taken ill May 31 at his bench at the Hall China Company, where he had been employed since 1915. His death was attributed to a heart ailment.
Hackathorn had the distinction of having worked as a potter 70 1/2 years. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Hackathorn, he was born July 28, 1869, in East Liverpool. He started to work at the age of 11 for the old Wylie China Company. He was employed in the West End Pottery for many years before going to the Hall China Company.
Hackathorn was a member of Local Union 29, National Brotherhood of Operative Potters, the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church. For many years he was a member of the former Sons Of Veterans camp.
Besides Mrs. Powell, with whom he had lived since 1935, he leaves a son, James A. Hackathorn of El Monte, Calif.; a brother, Henry Hackathorn of East Liverpool, and a granddaughter.
Rites will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Martin Funeral Home by Rev. T. Victor Scott of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday and Monday at the funeral home.
