Matthew M. "Matt" Hoffman, 56, of Panama City, Fla., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at a local hospital after an extended illness.

He was born in Castle Pollard, Ireland, and had lived in Panama City since 1987. Matt retired as a technical sergeant after 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father. After his military service, Matt received his associate's degree in nursing at Gulf Coast Community College. Matt worked a number of years in home health care, and last worked at Tyndall AFB Clinic as a RN case manager.

Matt fulfilled his childhood dream and lifelong passion by obtaining his private pilot's license. He was a member of the Tyndall Aero Club and Callaway Assembly of God Church. Matt loved life, his family, his Lord and the Bible. He was special to every life he touched.

He was predeceased by his father, Wylie W. Hoffman. Survivors include his wife of 31 years and his best friend, Sonja Weems Hoffman of Panama City; mother, Madonna Hoffman of Boise, Idaho; No. 1 son, Jonathan Matthew Hoffman of Panama City; brother, Thaddeus Hoffman and wife, Terri, of Boise, Idaho; sister, Elizabeth Hoffman Zellers and husband, Joel, of Hailey, Idaho; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and his loving Weems family.

We want to say a special thanks to our dear friends, Bryan and Beth Edson.

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Tony Teas and the Rev. Donald Price officiating. He will be interred at Biloxi National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until time for services at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Callaway Assembly of God Church Missions Fund. The family extends its sincere appreciation to the Bay Medical Center SICU staff and physicians for their loving care.
