In 1917 in California, she met and formed a variety act with Stan Laurel. It was in 1917 with Stan Laurel, (credited as Stan Jefferson), that she played a part in a comedy short called 'Nuts in May'. This silent short comedy is noted for being the screen debut of Stan Laurel. Mae Dahlberg is credited as 'Mae Laurel' in several of the films she appeared in. Though Stan and Mae never married, their professional partnership was such that they at least lived together as common-in-law husband and wife from 1919 to 1925, although Mae had a husband in Australia. Mae maintained that it was she who suggested Stan change his name to Laurel.
In 1925 she returned to Australia. She died in a nursing home in New York.
