Mr. Barnard was born June 3, 1918, at Arcadia the son of Harley W. and Myrtle M. Caldwell Barnard. Lawrence was a retired coal miner. He was raised in Arcadia and attended Custard Grade School and Arcadia High School. He worked for Mackie-Clemens Coal Company and lived in Arcadia most of his life. Lawrence married Crystal Shead on Dec. 7, 1937, at Girard, Kansas. Mrs. Barnard preceded him in death May 8, 2002. He was a member of the New Life Baptist Church at Franklin, the Girard Masonic Lodge #93, and the Fort Scott Scottish Rites. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Kay Foster and her husband Richard of Pittsburg, and Linda Maye Turner and her husband Bill of Fort Scott, two sons, Donald Ray Barnard and his wife Barbara of Arcadia and Lawrence Wayne Barnard of Burlingame, eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren. Mr. Barnard was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son, Billy Joe Barnard, and a grandson, Donald R. Barnard Jr.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at the Sheffield Cemetery near Arcadia with Randy Woods officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma where Masonic Rites will be at 6 p.m. Monday at the Bedene Chapel. The family suggests memorials to the Mirza Shrine Transportation Fund. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, Kansas 66712.
