Son of another Jonathan Low (1790-1866) who was a carpenter in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Jonathan moved to Sardis in 1860 seeking adventure. He came to the area to make his way as a carpenter when the new County Courthouse was being built at Sardis. He married Demarius M. Jones, daughter of Martin Jones & Hannah Caroline Faries Jones in June, 1861. The couple would eventually become parents to nine children, seven of whom would live to adulthood: William Adolphus, Annie Elizabeth, Martin Fletcher, David Dunlap, Martha Lee, Rufus Hampton, and James Rascoe Low. During the Civil War, Jonathan served with the 2nd Mississippi Partisan Rangers Cavalry, Company K, Jernigan's Company, raised in Panola County, Mississippi. The regiment never received a number and was known throughout the war as Ballentine's Battalion or Regiment. He enlisted on July 31, 1862 at Batesville, Mississippi and was detached on April 1, 1864. His job was "Wagon Master and Artisan" at the beginning of his service, and when he was detached, was a "Mechanic". Following the War, he came back to Sardis and continued his life as a farmer. His first wife died from complications of measles on June 12, 1881. In July of that same year he married Martha Ella Roach, widow of David Bowles. Together they had two more children: Louise and Jonathan Jones Low. Martha Ella would become more mother than step-mother to this large brood of children. Jonathan was a member in good standing of the First Baptist Church in Sardis, and the pastor of the church wrote the obituary that appeared in the paper following his death.
