Irma was stationed in Samoa while in the Navy. She taught Samoan women how to stay clean and care for their children and translated the US Navy book on caretaking into Samoan. She never married, was an alcoholic and died in the Dayton State Hospital. Her nephew Jack McDonald adored her.
