Paula Irene Barnett (nee Cossette), 67, of Branch, passed away at home on Thursday, Oct. 18 surrounded by her loving family in the home in where she was born on August 1, 1940 the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Repps) Cossette.

She attended grade school, in Carr Settlement and graduated from Mason County Central High School. Following high school, she attended Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant and Baker College in Muskegon. After college she found the older and pesky neighbor boy, Sammy Barnett, quite attractive. The couple exchanged vows on Jan. 28, 1961 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Custer and shared 46 years of marriage living on the family farm in Branch. She helped her husband run the family business as time allowed, but her primary focus was raising their six children. Also, Paula put a lot of time and effort into tending to her huge garden while canning and freezing vegetables to provide for her large growing family. She was a former member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Custer and had been a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Baldwin for many years.

n 1974 she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, although she never let her challenges make her feel victimized or sorry for herself. Some of her favorite sayings included “quit your pouting,” “keep a smile on your face” and “no crying”. She was quite a tomboy and loved sports. She played on the Carr’s Rockets softball team and they won a Class C Independent State Title. In 1989, Paula was inducted into Mason County’s Softball Hall of Fame for her accomplishments. She also had an enthusiasm for animals and the outdoors. She spent hours riding her horse Coco, and most recently adored her cat named Gordy.

In addition to her loving and devoted husband Sam, she is survived by her children Greg (Melanie) of Saline, Mark (Linda) of Scottville, Andrea (Andy) Gumieny of Grandville, Michelle (Tim) Zych of Caledonia, Jeff (Tracey) of Scottville and Chad (Jennifer) currently serving in the Air Force; 13 grandchildren, Nicholas and Nate Barnett, Jessica Barnett, Mike, Scott and Jack Gumieny, Maddie, Tanner, Evan and Cole Zych, Chase, Riley and Sadie Barnett; a brother Robert Cossette of Branch; a brother-in-law Dr. Ned Krohn of Muskegon and several nieces, nephews, godchildren and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two siblings, Mary Lou Krohn and Edward Cossette.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 26 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Verdun Funeral Home, 585 7th Street, Baldwin, with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. A Resurrection Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church in Baldwin with the Rev. Tom Brown, celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Gregory Cemetery in Branch.
