The death of Andrew Hufford, Sr., briefly alluded to last week, was peculiarly sad. He was a man about fifty years of age, residing out north of Rossville, and was engaged in digging a well on his farm. The digging had proceeded something over fifty feet, and for two days no work had been done. On Tuesday, the 6th of December, he went down -- after dinner -- to complete the work and had not descended ten feet till the fatal damp, carbonic acid gas, that had accumulated, seized him, paralyzed him and rendered him lifeless. Those at the windlass noticed something wrong and tried to haul him back, but he fell out of the bucket and dropped to the bottom of the well, and then to make the matter worse, the loose earth and sand began to cave in on him till he was soon almost entirely covered up. Hence they had to work more than three hours before the body could be extricated; this was done only by fixing a sort of a grappling hook to the one leg that was exposed to view, and then pulling the body up by the united strength of three men, on the windlass. Of course, Mr. Hufford died almost instantly, as soon as he fell to the bottom of the well; had he been taken out immediately, he might have been resuscitated.

NOTE: The fact that Andrew was listed as "Andrew Hufford, Sr." in his obituary is not reason to believe that his middle initial was the same as that of his son Andrew. Indeed, his obituary is the only place where the suffix "Sr." was used with this name. It may have been used more as a way of communicating that it was the older of the "Andrew's" who had died.
