Oldest Son and second child of Frank C. and his second wife, Mary Ella Hampton. Brother to Florence, Ida, George Sr., Elmer & Earl Hampton. Francis was a 1st Lieutenant, Company A. 751 Tank Battalion in World War II. He was killed in Italy by a sniper in April 1945 as he was peaking his head out of the tank while directing it against the enemy. He was shot in the head, just below his helmut. After his death, his crew destroyed the sniper & the tree he was in with a tank shell.

He was originally buried in a cemetery in Italy, but when the Italian cemetery was being dismantled, his parents brought his body home to bury him in the family plot in Bristol Cemetery.

His nephew, Francis M. Hampton, son of George Sr and his first wife Frances (Coppola) Hampton, is named in W. Francis' honor.
