TRAGIC END OF A GOOD CITIZEN
This entire section was shocked by the news that Mr. Wm. J. M. Benefield had met a tragic death at his home at Johnson' Cross Roads at 8 o'clock last Thursday evening. He had been in ill health for several years, suffering greatly with his head. He retired early the fated evening, complaining of this trouble, and later arose and secured a shotgun and inflicted a wound near his heart, from the effects of which death resulted in a short while. It was thought that his affliction had temporarily dethroned his reason.
The following afternoon many friends and neighbors gathered at High Pine church to pay their respects to the memory of a good neighbor and a valuable citizen. Appropriate services were conducted by Rev. E. M. Glenn.
Mr. Benefield was a member of the church at High Pine and was sincerely esteemed by all who knew him. His unfortunate death will be a loss to his country. He leaves a family and many friends to mourn his death. The deceased was 64 years of age.
