Olin & Willie's first home was on Willingham Creek near the Green's Chapel Church. The site of the home remained in the family, owned by their granddaughter Willie Jean Benefield Murphy, until 2010. In 1915, Olin joined Green's Chapel and Willie moved her membership from her family church, Liberty Grove Methodist Church. There were very few Sundays that Olin was not sitting in the same pew at Green's Chapel Methodist Church from that day until the end of his life.
In 1917, Olin and Willie bought the farm next door to his parents. A cousin to both of them, Joseph Calhoun Burns, Jr. had been renting the house. The Benefield's lived in this lovely old country home until they died. On his farm, Olin grew cotton, corn, bell pepper and alfalfa and bred cattle.
1939-1941: Olin F. Benefield served as a member of the United States Selective Service System for President Franklin D. Roosevelt & Alabama Governor Frank M. Dixon.
As he grew older, in the afternoons he could be found under the shade of the huge oak tree in the front yard with cousins and neighbors laughing at stories from their past. Olin & Willie spent many afternoons in the cemetery of Green's Chapel; he would sit on the wall surrounding his parents' graves (usually with a twig to whittle) while Willie planted flowers around Wilson's grave.
To his grandchildren, "Papa" provided love, kindness and guidance that will always be remembered.
On Thursday night, the first day of July 1965, Olin, like his father, died of a heart attack while he slept. He died just a few yards from the home where he was born.
