Mr. Latch was born Dec. 12, 1921, in Cisco, Texas, to William and Amanda Latch. He married his first wife, Emily Collins, on Aug. 31, 1946, and she preceded him in death in 1980.
Mr. Latch married Edith Barnard Patterson on Jan. 4, 1982, in Durango. He had lived in Durango since 1952.
He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Petroleum Club of Durango. He was a charter member of Christ the King Lutheran Church. He enjoyed football, and he played football at Colorado College. He served in the U.S. Marines in World War II, surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor and the sinking of the USS Helena in the South Pacific.
He was preceded in death by his son William Philson Latch, who was killed in Bangkok, Thailand, while working for NBC in 1985, and four brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Margaret Hjermstad, of Durango; his stepson, Dan Patterson, of Durango; his stepdaughter, Jerry Lyn Peterson, of Napa, Calif.; his sister, Mary Carey, of Talkeetna, Alaska; seven grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
