Samuel E. Abel was born Nov. 22, 1811 (sic), at Cameron, Clinton county, Mo., and died at his home in Holton, Kan., Feb. 2, 1919, at the age of 67 years, 2 months and 10 days. When he was thirteen years of age he came Jackson county, Kansas, settling on a farm near Circleville, where his boyhood years were spent. He was one of twelve children, all of whom have passed away, except one brother, Alvin, who lives west of Holton. Mr. Abel was married on February 8th, 1876 to Harriett Elizabeth Johnson also of Circleville. Mrs. Abel survives her husband. After their marriage they moved on a farm four and a half miles northwest of Holton, where they lived for 33 years. Mr. Abel was engaged in farming and stock business .... Seven children were born to Mrs. Abel, all of whom are living: They are Mrs. Martin Long, who resides at Custer, South Dakota; Mrs. William R. Boyd of Pittsburg, Pa.; Tessa E. Abel of Holton; Mrs. John T. Swetlick, who lives at Kansas City, Mo.; Rufus T. and Charles H. of Holton and Leroy P. Abel, who is with the American Expeditionary force in France. Mr. Able is also survived by three granddaughters, Mary Elizabeth, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Abel and Mary Ellen, and Martha Jane Long, the children of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Long. Mr. Abel moved to this city in 1909, having been elected treasurer of Jackson county, in which capacity he served four years .... Mr. Samuel Able spent 54 years of his life in this county .... The burial was made in the Holton cemetery in charge of the Masonic order of which Mr. Abel was a member.
